A leisure complex owned by the trustees of Salisbury Hospital Staff Club has recently undergone complete refurbishment, which included the installation of a new heating system in the two swimming pool and gymnasium areas.
The principal requirement was for constant comfort temperatures in both areas. Turbulent air movement and stratification, or ‘cold spots’, had to be eliminated to avoid draughts and discomfort for the public. Safety is also paramount in these environments. Any build-up of condensation on walls or floors can create slippery – and therefore potentially hazardous conditions for users.
A Reznor Air Mixing system, consisting of three separate UPVC ducts suspended at various heights to suit the application, was installed to provide optimum flow of warm air through each of the three activity areas. The Air Mixing ducts are perforated along their entire length. Warm air is forced through at high speed, producing an immediate and effective mix with room air, yet without turbulent air motion or stratification.
Warm air to serve the ducts is generated by air handling units which incorporate plate-type heat recovery equipment for additional energy savings. The air handling units operate from a low pressure hot water system, fed from a condensing gas boiler plant.
The lightweight Air Mixing duct is manufactured from non-corrosive components and is therefore an excellent solution in the damp environment of a swimming pool. The velocity of the warm air forced through the hundreds of perforations along the length of the duct produces an immediate warming effect. Good movement of warm air through the swimming pool and gym means that condensation cannot build up on walls and floors, so the areas remain safe for users. At the same time, flow-through of air, while not sufficiently strong to cause discomfort, eliminates the potential for cold spots. The Air Mixing system is easy to install using slide support tracking, which also allows it to be removed for cleaning. It is lightweight and available in a wide range of colour options to match with any interior schemes.
