O Elliot Sweeps up with Reznor

“This is an extremely flexible heating system, with excellent economy of operation. It is quiet and efficient, and complements our operations.” John Bailey, Works Manager of Elliotts, comments.

Housewares wholesaler O Elliott Ltd of Saxmundham in Suffolk imports household equipment – such as brooms, buckets and bathroom sets – to supply the domestic retail trade. The company operates from a 3,000m² warehouse and production facility, recently refurbished and re-configured internally.

The re-configuration included the installation of floor-to-ceiling racking in three storage bays. The result was partial obstruction of the existing floor-mounted cabinet heaters. Warm air could not circulate effectively to keep employees warm. The units, now rendered both inefficient and ineffective, were also noisy and occupied valuable floor space. A more appropriate, energy efficient alternative system was required.

A total of seven suspended UPA gas-fired warm air units from Reznor were installed to direct heat between the racking in the warehouse area and to provide even heat distribution around the production area. Three Reznor Maximizor recirculation fans were installed in the roof. The units, which incorporate power-vented flues, enabled horizontal flueing through the walls using previously cut holes for the flue outlets.

The heaters maintain constant comfort temperatures of 19°C in the warehouse area and 22°C in the production area where employees sit or stand to pack goods. The temperatures can be quickly adjusted according to requirements, making the system both highly efficient and very economical to run. Fuel cost projections calculated by Reznor showed a ‘substantial’ first year reduction over the previous heating system and on-going year-on-year savings.

The Reznor UPA is a high performance heater, listed on the Government’s Energy Technology Listing, and may qualify for Enhanced Capital Allowances. The scheme enables businesses that invest in energy-efficient technology to claim 100% first year taxable profits.

Another major advantage of the Reznor UPA units was that some existing flue holes could be re-utilised. John Walsh of Thermalair explains: “This building is typical of its age in terms of material and structure, and we were unable to cut any new penetrations in the roof. The Reznor UPA is one of the few heaters that allowed us to re-use previous flue holes.”
